CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Nov. 22, 2013 – Holiday poinsettias are now for sale at the Charles Hutson Horticulture Greenhouse at Southeast Missouri State University.
Horticulture students have been working with 42 varieties of poinsettias at the greenhouse. The poinsettias were sent for this year’s poinsettia trials by three leading breeding companies in the United States — Paul Ecke Ranch, Syngenta Flowers Inc. and Dummen USA Inc.
The companies sent the plants as rooted cuttings in August, and greenhouse staff and students have potted and grown them. Before the poinsettias went on sale, students at the greenhouse evaluated the plants and sent their analyses to each company.
“Seven of these varieties have not yet been released to the market for commercial production,” said Denise Pingel, greenhouse manager.
An open house is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 25 for people to “take a look at all the wonderful colors,” according to Pingel.
Students, staff and faculty who show their Redhawks ID will receive 10 percent off their plant purchases. Beginning Dec. 2, hours are Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to noon. The greenhouse is closed on Sundays. The greenhouse is located at 1039 Bertling St. For more information, contact the greenhouse at (573) 651-2316.
