“Bringing Fashion to the Healthcare Market” topic of Bakersmith’s Presentation

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Oct. 31, 2011 – The chief executive officer and president of Scrubs & Beyond will present the keynote address at the kick off of Global Entrepreneurship Week Nov. 14 at Southeast Missouri State University.
Karla Bakersmith, who graduated from Southeast in 1981 with a bachelor of science in business administration degree with an emphasis in marketing and a minor in textile studies, will speak from noon to 1:30 p.m. in Glenn Auditorium of Robert A. Dempster Hall. Her presentation, titled “Bringing Fashion to the Healthcare Market,” is also part of the 2011-2012 University Speaker Series and is free and open to the public.
“It is terrific to have Karla kick off our week of events,” said Dr. James Stapleton, executive director of the Douglas C. Greene Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship and associate professor of management at Southeast. “She is a true innovator that is responsible for reinventing an entire retail industry. She provides a great example for our students of how to create new value in an existing market. Karla and her team at Scrubs and More did not think outside the box; they threw the box away and reshaped an industry.”
Bakersmith is the founder of Scrubs & Beyond, a medical apparel company that incorporates a chain of retails stores, a catalog division and an internet business.
Bakersmith launched Scrubs & Beyond to give medical professionals a fun and inviting place to shop for scrubs. Scrubs & Beyond changed what some consider to be a boring shopping experience into an adventure in shopping for scrubs. In 2010, the company celebrated its 10 year anniversary with 28 stores in 14 states. Scrubs & Beyond is known for its fashion forward scrubs, outstanding customer service and whimsical designs.
Global Entrepreneurship Week, now in its fourth year at Southeast, connects young people everywhere through local, national and global activities designed to help them explore their potential as self-starters and innovators, and to develop an entrepreneurial mindset and culture. Students, educators, entrepreneurs, business leaders, employees, non-profit leaders, government officials and many others will participate in a range of activities, from large-scale competitions and events to intimate networking gatherings. The week will focus on generating new ideas and raising awareness for the power of entrepreneurship to transform lives.
Global Entrepreneurship Week was created by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation in the United States and the Make Your Mark campaign in the United Kingdom in 2008. Students around the world will participate in the Global Entrepreneurship Week 2011 events.
Global Entrepreneurship Week at Southeast is directed by the Douglas C. Greene Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship.
Before launching Scrubs & Beyond, Bakersmith was the vice president of Merchandising and Marketing for Angelica Corporation and previously served as a buyer for the May Company.
Her background in entrepreneurship began during her childhood. Bakersmith grew up in a family business of apparel retail stores, and she became interested in business from an early age. She credits her family’s interest in business to her success.
She serves on a number of philanthropic advisory boards, including the St. Louis University John Cook School of Entrepreneurship Advisory Board, The University of Missouri-St. Louis-Women’s Initiative Leadership Council, The University of Missouri-St. Louis College of Nursing Leadership Council, The Women’s Forum of St. Louis, Barco Nightingale Foundation and The Lutheran Family and Children’s Services Marketing Council. She also is a member of Vistage of St. Louis.
