Dr. Rebecca and Larry Summary of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, made a $5,000 gift to establish the scholarship. Their gift was matched with an additional $5,000 through the Faculty/Staff component of the Honoring Tradition – Inspiring Success Comprehensive Campaign through the Southeast Missouri University Foundation.
The recipient of the renewable Rebecca and Larry Summary Scholarship in Economics will be a student enrolled at Southeast Missouri State University who is majoring in economics with a minimum 2.8 grade point average. The Department of Economics and Finance Scholarship Committee will select the recipient.
Rebecca and Larry grew up in Southern Illinois, and both received bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Eastern Illinois University. Larry is a U.S. Army veteran and served with the 3/1 Cavalry in Vietnam. Rebecca received a doctoral degree from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in 1983. Larry is ABD in political science from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale and received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a major in accounting from Southeast Missouri State in 1987. Rebecca began her career at Southeast in 1983 and is currently a professor of economics and chair of the Department of Economics and Finance. Larry taught political science at Southeast for 10 years and served as the first director of the Office of Instructional Technology in the Center for Scholarship in Teaching and Learning. He retired from Southeast in 1998 and was a small business owner in Cape Girardeau for several years. The Summarys have a son, Nicholas, who is a biomedical engineer for the Veterans Administration.
