The Southeast Debate Team competed Oct. 19-20 in Anderson University’s annual debate tournament. Taylor Looney, a junior from Arnold, Missouri, and Samantha Giblin, a freshman from Ballwin, Missouri, marched through preliminary rounds with five wins and advanced to the semifinal round as the 4th seed. In a unanimous decision, Looney and Giblin defeated a team from Duquesne University and advanced into the final round against Cedarville University. On a split decision Looney and Giblin were awarded first place.
In addition to taking the top prize, Looney and Giblin were recognized as the 8th and 7th place speakers in the entire tournament.
I’m pleased with Taylor and Samantha’s performance, T. J. Lakin, SEMO debate coach, said. Their success is a testament to hard work and dedication.
Looney is a global cultures and languages major, anthropology option, and Giblin is a political science major.
Redhawk Debate will next compete at the University of Dayton in early November.
