CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo.,
Dec. 16, 2005 – The Southeast Missouri State University Board of Regents today renewed the charter for the Lift for Life Academy.
The new charter will begin on July 1 and continue through June 30, 2011.
A Charter School Committee in the Department of Educational Administration and Counseling reviewed the application for renewing the Academy’s charter. Members of that committee include: Dr. Jerry Waddle, chair; Dr. Ruth Ann Roberts, Dr. Margaret Dalton, Dr. Lisa Bertrand and Dr. Jim Sucharski, liaison.
The committee was unanimous that the Lift for Life Academy met all the criteria required for charter schools, said Dr. Jane Stephens, Southeast provost.
Charter schools are taxpayer funded public schools that are operated independently of established school districts. By state law, charter schools may only operate in the Kansas City and St. Louis school districts and must be chartered by specific universities or the Kansas City or St. Louis school districts.
The Life for Life Academy’s initial charter was approved by the Southeast Board of Regents in April 2000.
