CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., May 13, 2011 — The Southeast Missouri State University Board of Regents today set incidental fees for the 2011-2012 academic year.
Under the approved plan, incidental fees charged to Missouri undergraduate students will increase by $3 per credit hour to $187.80 per credit hour. Incidental fees charges for lower division regional campus courses will increase by $2 per credit hour to $121 per credit hour.
Under Senate Bill 389, universities may only increase fees charged to resident undergraduate students by the amount of the percentage increase in the consumer price index. For fiscal 2011-2012, the allowable increase for Southeast, as determined by the Missouri Department of Higher Education is $3.16 per credit hour, according to Kathy Mangels, vice president for Finance and Administration. The Board of Regents today approved the allowable increase, as recommended by the University’s Budget Review Committee, but agreed to only charge students an additional $3 per credit hour. Under action approved by the Board today, the University will waive 16 cents from the allowable $3.16 per credit hour increase for Missouri undergraduates.
Mangels said the University has not increased incidental fees charged to resident undergraduate students for the last two fiscal years. She said the Board approved increasing incidental fees in fiscal 2011 by $5 per credit hour, which was allowed by the Consumer Price Index, but this increase was not assessed to students.
She also said Southeast’s incidental fees will remain lower than almost every comparable university in the region. Southeast’s incidental fees for fiscal 2012 will be less than the University of Missouri-Columbia’s rate of $261.60 per credit hour, Truman State University’s rate of $277.34 per credit hour and Missouri State University’s rate of $194 per credit hour.
Under the new incidental fee rate schedule approved today, non-resident undergraduate students will be charged an additional $6.50 per credit hour; Missouri graduate students will be charged an additional $4 per credit hour; and non-resident graduate students will be charged an additional $8 per credit hour.
The new per credit hour incidental fee rates charged will be $355.80 per credit hour for non-resident undergraduate students; $241.30 per credit hour for Missouri graduate students; and $449.80 per credit hour for non-resident graduate students.
The general student fee charged to students for FY2012 will be $30.70 per credit hour, which includes previously approved increases of $2 for aquatics, athletics and student programming and $5 for maintenance and repair. The general fee charged at the regional campuses will be $13.50 per credit hour (which includes $8.50 for technology and maintenance repair costs).
Based on increases approved today, total required fees per credit hour charged to students will be $218.50 for Missouri undergraduates; $386.50 for non-resident undergraduates; $272 for resident graduate students; $480.50 for non-resident graduate students; and $134.50 for lower division courses at the regional campuses.
Mangels said that if the University’s final state appropriation results in more dollars available, a portion of the remaining dollars would be used to provide additional institutional need-based financial aid to Southeast students.
