CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo.,
Jan. 16, 2009 – The River Campus Art Gallery at Southeast Missouri State University will present an exhibit of contemporary abstract paintings by Brian Smith beginning Jan. 20.
The Gallery opening reception will be held on Friday, Feb. 6, from 5-7 p.m. The River Campus Art Gallery is located on the first floor of the historic Seminary Building in Room 106. Smith’s fresh, dynamic pieces will remain on display through Feb. 19.
Smith holds a master of fine arts degree in painting from the University of Chicago (Ill.), and a bachelor of fine arts degree in painting from Boston University; Boston, Mass. His active, bold paintings are an investigation and celebration of imagination and the creative process.
“The act of painting is a vital experience,” Smith said. “I create from an intuitive base, constantly analyzing and striving for a particular logic and whole. A dazzling optical effect, a metaphorical sense of shape and a spirited emotional quality are fundamental characteristics of my art.”
A lecture will be held Feb. 4, from noon to 1 p.m. in the Seminary Building Room 257, where Smith will discuss the creative process of his work.
River Campus Art Gallery hours are 1 to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 1 to 7 p.m. on the first Friday of each month. All Gallery exhibitions, events and talks are free and open to the public.
