For the first time, a summer season ticket is now available for all three performances scheduled this summer at Southeast Missouri State University’s River Campus.
“Legally Blonde, Jr.” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. June 15 and 2 p.m. June 17 in the Donald C. Bedell Performance Hall. “Legally Blonde Jr.” the musical, with music and lyrics by Laurence O’Keefe and Nell Benjamin and book by Heather Hack, is based on the award-winning Broadway musical and movie. The musical follows the transformation of Elle Woods as she tackles stereotypes, snobbery and scandal in pursuit of her dreams.
“The cast will be 10- to 15-year-old children performing for children playing the parts of sorority sisters, law school students, hairdressers and more,” said Rhonda Weller-Stilson, director of the Earl and Margie Holland School of Visual and Performing Arts and associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts. “We’ve had great success with our kids performing for kids during the festival. We can’t wait to see what they do this year. There is so much young talent in the area.”
The smash hit musical, “Little Shop of Horrors,” with book and lyrics by Howard Ashman and music by Alan Menken, is about a hapless florist shop worker who raises a plant that feeds on humans. It will be performed at 7:30 p.m. June 14, 19, 22, 23, 26 and 27 and at 2 p.m. June 17 in the Wenda Kurka Rust Flexible Theatre.
The summer lineup also includes the comedy “The 39 Steps,” based on Alfred Hitchcock’s movie. It will be performed at 7:30 p.m. June 15, 16, 20 and 2, and at 2 p.m. June 24 in the Wendy Kurka Rust Flexible Theatre.
“This play has been described as a mix of a Hitchcock masterpiece with a juicy spy novel and a dash of Monty Python,” Weller-Stilson said. “It is a very fast-paced whodunit.”
