Rev. John Francis Friedel speaking to students at Southeast.
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo.,
Nov. 30, 2006 – The Catholic Campus Ministry/Rev. John Francis (J.) Friedel Scholarship has been endowed through the Southeast Missouri University Foundation.
The scholarship honors Friedel, who served as director/chaplain of Catholic Campus Ministry at Southeast Missouri State University from 1993 through summer 2006.
To honor Friedel and his devotion to Southeast, students of Catholic Campus Ministry decided to develop a scholarship in his name. On Oct. 11, students gathered to hear Friedel deliver the “Last Lecture,” a final sermon about what gives meaning to his life. When he was finished speaking, the students announced the endowment of the Catholic Campus Ministry/Rev. John Francis (J.) Friedel Scholarship. An unknowing Friedel was in tears as he humbly thanked everyone in attendance for the honor.
The scholarship will be awarded to students who are practicing Catholics, have a history of leadership in church and school, or graduated from Christian Brothers San Miguel Schools. A letter of reference from a pastor or principal and an essay by the applicant are required. Recipients must maintain a 3.5 grade point average to keep the scholarship.
From just a small group of students 13 years ago, Friedel built Catholic Campus Ministry at Southeast into what it is today – a strong, devoted congregation that often fills every seat of the Newman Center.
Along with his duties as chaplain, Friedel taught several theology classes. His dedication to students, both in and out of the classroom, earned him the respect of many at Southeast. Word of Friedel’s new assignment in Joplin, Mo., came to the student body at the end of the 2005-2006 academic year.
Friedel began serving as diocesan director of vocations and seminarians, pastor of St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, and director/chaplain of the Catholic Campus Ministry at Missouri Southern State University in Joplin, Mo., this fall.
