Southeast Missouri State University’s Department of Music will present its annual Jazz Series season opener, “Snazzy and Jazzy,” at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 14 in the Donald C. Bedell Performance Hall at the River Campus.
This exciting concert will feature Southeast’s two jazz ensembles along with student soloists. Pre-concert music by the Southeast Jazz Combo will begin at 7 p.m.
The concert will open with the Jazz Lab Band which will play jazz in an assortment of styles, from composer Kurt Weill’s “Speak Low,” a classic from vibraphonist Milt Jackson entitled “Bag’s Groove,” and an early Sammy Nestico composition – “Sam’s Boogie.” Although this is a non-auditioned ensemble, the music will be exciting and full of energy. Featured performers in this ensemble include Sydney Reynolds (piano), Matt Maxwell (tenor sax), Nathan Coleson (trumpet), Tayrin Sain (trumpet), and Collin Burnham (drumset).
Southeast’s Studio Jazz Ensemble performed at the 2008 Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival and also received accolades from their 2016 tour of schools in the St. Louis area as well as from local concerts at the River Campus. This ensemble most recently played at the 2016 Elmhurst Jazz Festival in Chicago last February to great acclaim, receiving several outstanding musician awards.
In this season opening concert, the Studio Jazz Ensemble will feature many varied jazz compositions from some of the greats in big band jazz. Highlighted in this concert will be “Basie Straight Ahead” from the Count Basie library, “Mexicali Nose” from the great Buddy Rich jazz library, and a jazz arrangement by trombone player, Austin Weber. Jazz vocalist, Lindsey Grojean, will sing a couple of jazz standards, “Mack the Knife” and “When Sunny Gets Blue.” Highlighted student soloists include Josh Whalen (tenor sax), Matt Flanagan (trombone), Dustin Haigler (piano), Kris Spala (drumset), and Jon Allgeyer (trumpet).
