CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Aug. 17, 2005ᾰSoutheast Missouri State University’s area higher education centers in Sikeston, Perryville, Kennett and Malden, Mo., hosted “Southeast at Your Service” for off-campus students Aug. 9 and 11.
New students learned about the University Studies program and academic information, career linkages, Southeast Key and Portal, My Southeast, Southeast Online, Student Financial Services, library services for off-campus students and Student Development resources.
“The sessions were very informative and a great way for the students to come together and learn about the University,” said Judy Buck, director of the Sikeston Area Higher Education Center (SAHEC). “The students were impressed with the information provided on all aspects of services and programs offered at the Center as well as on the main campus. Southeast staff did an outstanding job in sharing information and answering student questions.”
This was the first year a face-to-face orientation was held for new students at the Sikeston, Kennett and Malden higher education centers. Previous orientation sessions were delivered from Sikeston to Perryville, Kennett and Malden via interactive television (ITV). The new program allowed each location to host their own three-hour session for students to interact face-to-face with University faculty and staff.
Ella Watkins of Kennett, Mo., attended the orientation session at the Kennett Area Higher Education Center. She said the session provided her with an abundance of good information.
“Everyone was nice,” she said. “They were right there to answer your questions. They didn’t leave anything for you to wonder about.”
Watkins, who plans on pursuing a degree in social work, said information provided on the Southeast student portal was particularly helpful.
“I was extremely impressed,” she said.
Barbie Sadler of Sikeston, Mo., a new student who attended the orientation session at the Sikeston Area Higher Education Center, said she too was pleased with “Southeast at your Service.”
“It was very informational and gave me a better understanding of what college is about,” Sadler said. “It also helped me make the decision that this was the right choice for me after being out of school for 25 years.”
Dr. Rick Hux, director of the Harry L. Crisp Bootheel Education Center (CBEC) in Malden, Mo., said, “The new students felt the program was very informative about the University system. The event was well organized and the presenters did an excellent job delivering their information. I know this event will continue to grow bigger with each year.”
Students were informed about each University departments and the requirements for degree program offered through Southeast. Refreshments, University planners and T-shirts were provided to students at each orientation session.
“The students were honored that the University sent faculty and staff to Kennett as a means to help them achieve their goals and begin a successful educational experience with Southeast,” said Marsha Blanchard, director of the Kennett Area Higher Education Center (KAHEC). “By having the face-to-face interaction, students will now feel more comfortable accessing University resources while attending KAHEC.
