Family Weekend

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Sept. 10, 2012 – An assortment of activities for all ages is planned for Family Weekend Sept. 21-23 at Southeast Missouri State University, which also will include the Missouri National Guard/Military Appreciation Game.

“This year, Family Weekend has a variety of exciting new events for students and their families,” said Michele Irby, director of Campus Life and Event Services. “The weekend should offer opportunities for fellowship and fun, and at the same time, pay tribute to the Missouri National Guard and active military and retired military veterans.”

The centerpiece of the weekend will feature the Southeast Redhawks taking on defending Ohio Valley Conference champions Tennessee Tech in the Family Weekend football game at 6 p.m. Sept. 22 in Houck Stadium. The Redhawks will celebrate the Missouri National Guard/Military Appreciation Game, and individuals with valid military IDs will be admitted free. Officials with the Missouri National Guard will be on hand as the Guard has been awarded naming rights for Missouri National Guard Field at Houck Stadium. There will be military tributes throughout the game, and the Redhawks will wear camouflage uniforms. Redhawk dogtags provided by the Missouri National Guard will be given to the first 2,000 admitted in the stadium.

Family Weekend is a long-standing event that began in 1977. Originally “Parents’ Weekend” for the families of football players, the event grew over the years into a weekend of activities for everyone related to students and the University. Irby says Family Weekend allows families to visit their students, meet roommates, friends and instructors, tour facilities and attend University-wide events.

Kicking off Family Weekend will be the Horticulture Open House from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21, in the Charles L. Hutson Horticulture Greenhouse.

A Redhawks soccer game is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Sept. 21 at Houck Stadium. Southeast students are admitted free with a Redhawks ID. For information on tickets, visit

The Student Activities Council (SAC) will welcome families with a variety of weekend events, starting with a Late Night Movie. “Footloose” will be shown at 9 p.m. in the Rose Theatre on Sept. 21. This is a free movie event with free popcorn served.

On Saturday, Sept. 22, families have the opportunity to meet University President Kenneth W. Dobbins from 9:30-10:30 a.m. in the University Center South Dining Room. During Dobbins’ tenure at Southeast, academic programs have been enhanced and enrollment has increased significantly. Dobbins and his wife, Jeanine Larson Dobbins, founder and director emeritus of the Missouri Statewide Early Literacy Intervention Program, have a son, Paul, and a daughter-in-law, Stacey, who are both Southeast graduates, and a grandson, Lincoln Kenneth. This will be the Dobbins’ family’s 22nd Family Weekend celebration at Southeast.

Family festivities are scheduled from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the University Center. Festivities will feature musicians “The Bergamot,” caricature artist Ron Kantrowitz, balloon artist Lester McNeely, body art by Susan McNeely and the Norman Magic Experience. Also included in the festivities will be student performances by international students, who also will provide mini educational sessions, and 90-minute shuttle tours around campus, through the downtown area and to Southeast’s River Campus.

Following the family festivities, lunch will be served between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. in the Redhawks Market in the University Center. The lunch is free to Southeast students and $5 to all others at the door.

A Redhawk football pre-game tailgate party is scheduled for 4-6 p.m. Sept. 22 in front of Houck Stadium on Bellevue Street. Tailgaters can enjoy free food and beverages as well as live music and appearances by the Golden Eagles Marching Band, the Sundancers, the Southeast cheerleaders and Rowdy. A tailgate tent will be set up for the party, and seating will be available. Football ticket information can be found at Student admission to the football game is free with a valid Redhawk ID.
