Southeast Celebrating MLK Day of Service Jan. 18 with Porch Light Project

Southeast Missouri State University will celebrate its 2020 SEMO Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service with the Porch Light Project in Cape Girardeau on Saturday, Jan. 18.

Southeast’s Office of Institutional Equity and Diversity, in partnership with St. James AME Church, Ameren UE, the City of Cape Girardeau Police Department and other community organizations, will distribute and install 500 energy efficient lightbulbs on porches in neighborhoods in the Cape Girardeau community. The lightbulbs, thanks to a generous donation from Ameren UE, are an effort to reduce crime and increase safety in neighborhoods.

The day of service, slated for 2-4 p.m., welcomes all students, faculty, staff and community members to volunteer and participate. The Porch Light Project will be based at St. James AME Church, 516 North St. in Cape Girardeau. Volunteers should plan to arrive around 1 p.m. Lightbulb distribution will begin at 2 p.m.

Lightbulbs can be delivered to residents or be picked up at St. James AME Church between 2 and 4 p.m.

To volunteer or for more information, contact St. James AME Church at or call (573) 334-9119.

The day of service is planned in conjunction with Southeast’s annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Dinner on Jan. 29 and as a part of the University’s Black History Month events.
