CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Nov. 5, 2013 – The Southeast Guitar Ensemble will perform its “Fall Guitar Ensemble” concert at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 19 in the Robert F. and Gertrude L. Shuck Music Recital Hall at Southeast Missouri State University’s River Campus.
The concert will showcase a variety of exciting pieces written for the guitar. Selections will include Will Ayton’s “Prelude and Ricercare” for guitar quartet and “Skid Row,” an exhilarating piece for three guitars by Kevin Callahan. Well-known pieces for the solo guitar will be featured as well, including Leo Brouwer’s “Danza Caracteristica” and JS Bach’s Prelude from BMV 998.
“The concert’s going be great this semester,” said Patrick Rafferty, director of the Guitar Ensemble and a faulty member in the Department of Music.
The concert will be performed by guitar performance majors who work year round as soloists, and most of them will attend graduate school after completing their undergraduate degrees at Southeast, Rafferty said.
The Southeast Guitar Ensemble, open to all students regardless of major by audition, performs each semester, offering programs of transcriptions and original compositions for multiple classical guitars. In addition, guitar majors in the ensemble learn and perform standard chamber music repertoire for classical guitar in a variety of configurations. Recent concerts have featured guitar duos and trios, flute and guitar duets, voice and guitar duos, piano and guitar works, and pieces for string quartet with guitar. The Southeast Guitar Ensemble has appeared regularly at the Mid-America Guitar Ensemble Festival and has performed in master classes with Julian Gray and other coaches.
