CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., April 21, 2010 – The Department of Music at Southeast Missouri State University will present the Southeast Guitar Ensemble in a joint recital with the Cape Central Junior High Guitar Ensemble on Thursday, May 6. The performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Robert F. and Gertrude L. Shuck Music Recital Hall at the River Campus.
Patrick Rafferty, director of the Southeast Guitar Ensemble, has coordinated this new partnership with the Cape Central Junior High Guitar Department through its director, Ben Belanger, with the intent of highlighting the growing guitar scene in southeast Missouri. Belanger introduced guitar instruction into the music curriculum of the Cape Girardeau School District in 2006 and is excited to team up with Southeast on this new venture.
The concert will begin with the Cape Central group performing various pieces ranging from classical to contemporary repertoires. Both ensembles will be featured on two pieces by renowned performer and composer Jonathon Leathwood: “The Bells of St. Anne’s” and “Dervishes.” The Southeast Guitar Ensemble will bring the concert to an exciting close with exciting modern works by such contemporary composers as Maximo Diego Pujol, Celso Machado, Federico Moreno Torroba and Roland Dyens.
The Southeast Guitar Ensemble has been actively performing throughout the region since 1998. Rafferty, recently took over the ensemble, and, in a very short time, he has introduced the group and its audiences to the percussive and electrifying music of modern day Latin American composers. In addition to its regular performances on the campus, the Southeast Guitar Ensemble has performed for various schools and community groups and has made several well-received appearances at the Mid-America Guitar Ensemble Festival. Recently the ensemble presented a program to an enthusiastic audience for the St Paul UCC Fine Arts Concert Series in Belleville, Ill.
