Southeast Harrison College of Business Student Places First in International Competition

April 19, 2011 – A student from Southeast Missouri State University’s Harrison College of Business recently finished first in an international marketing and management competition.

Ryan Maurer, a senior integrated marketing communications major from Cape Girardeau, Mo., competed against more than 100 students from the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico in a Retail Management Business Simulation competition at the Collegiate DECA International Career Development Conference held April 13-16 in Orlando, Fla. The conference attracts more than 1,000 students annually.

“Ryan’s first place finish on an international stage is an impressive win,” said Dr. John Cherry, professor in Southeast’s Department of Management and Marketing, and chapter advisor for Collegiate DECA, also known on campus as the Marketing Club.

In February, Maurer finished first in the same event at the Collegiate DECA State Career Development Conference in Lake Ozark, Mo.

“Our students have achieved excellent results going back over the years,” Cherry said. “All our Collegiate DECA competitors bring honor to our college and the University.”

Collegiate DECA, a student service organization in the Harrison College of Business, is an international association of students studying marketing, management and entrepreneurship in business, finance, hospitality and marketing sales and service. The association’s Career Development Conference helps prepare students for entry into professional roles in these fields, according to Cherry.
