Southeast Hosting Missouri All-State Lions Band June 26-28

June 1, 2006 – The Southeast Missouri State University Department of Music and University Bands will host the 2006 Missouri All-State Lions Band June 26-28 on the Southeast campus.

The 80-plus member band of selected Missouri high school students will be on campus to rehearse for their performance at the 2006 International Lions Convention Parade in Boston, Mass., on July 1.

The band will be rehearsing daily in Brandt Music Hall and in Houck Stadium and will be presenting a “Farewell Concert” at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 28 in front of the Capaha Band Shell prior to the Cape Girardeau Municipal Band Concert.  The public is welcome to attend this free concert.  Spectators are also welcome at the rehearsals prior to the concert.

The 2006 Missouri All-State Lions Band will be under the direction of Barry Bernhardt, director of bands at Southeast.  The band has been under the direction of Jerry Hoover, director of bands at Missouri State University for the past 20 years.  Dr. Shane Mizicko, assistant professor of percussion at Southeast, will be assisting Bernhardt with the Percussion Section.   Melissa Cummins, a Southeast Alumna and assistant director of bands in Fenton, Mo., will help with the Woodwind Section, and David Opperman, director of bands at Francis Howell Central High School, will help with the Brass Section. Also serving on the staff are Southeast music education students Katie Rahmoeller of Webster Groves, Mo., Sara Parks of Farmington, Mo., Patricia Cameron and Chris Hensley, both of West Plains, Mo., Sarah Badger and Jane Urban, both of St. Louis, Amber Rhodes of Warrenton, Mo., Sarah Guthrie of Mexico, Mo.

“This is indeed a wonderful opportunity for Southeast Missouri State University’s Band Program in addition to the Cape Girardeau community to host these fine young bandsmen for three days,” Bernhardt said.

In addition to their performances in Boston, the band will be featured at the MSHAA All-Star High School Football Game July 22 at Central Missouri State University.
