Aug. 13, 2009 – Matthew Yount, full-time instructor for the Department of Music at Southeast Missouri State University, is scheduled to perform a solo piano recital at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 27. The recital is in the Robert F. and Gertrude L. Shuck Recital Hall in the Seminary Building at Southeast’s River Campus.
“The audience can expect a recital structured in two halves, each opened by a Bach ‘Toccata’ and closed with a pair of short, flashy pieces by Moszkowski in the first half and Prokofiev in the second,” explained Yount. “The central pieces will be the main course of both halves.”
The recital will include “Toccata,” from “Partita No. 6 in E minor” and “Toccata in E minor” by Johann Sebastian Bach. Yount will also play “Sonata in A flat major, op. 110” by Beethoven and “Liebestod” from Wagner’s opera, “Tristan and Isolde,” arranged for solo piano by Franz Liszt. Two pairs of miniatures, short little pieces, will be included in the recital at the closing of each half, one by Moszkowski and the other by Prokofiev.
“The Bach and Wagner pieces are of a deep, even profound sort, while the Moszkowski pieces are more whimsical,” Yount said. “There are moments where the music will be slow, lyrical and contemplative in nature, but there will be plenty of fire and technical exhibition as well.”
Yount has been with Southeast since 2003, performing in countless recitals with students, faculty and guest artists, but this will be his first public solo recital.
“I would say that the pieces in the recital represent a good cross-section of the kinds of works written for solo piano,” Yount said.
