March 21, 2011 – For the first time, Southeast Missouri State University will offer a summer Theatre and Dance Academy, providing an educational performing arts experience for kindergarteners through high school students.
The Academy will be offered during the first two weeks of June and is expected to be a springboard for students to consider studying the performing arts as possible future careers.
Classes will be offered June 6-10 and June 13-17 at Southeast’s River Campus and in the Memorial Dance Studio on Southeast’s main campus. Southeast faculty will teach the classes.
Partnering with the River Campus on the Academy is the Family Resource Center.
Morning classes to be offered June 6-10 include “World Rhythms,” “Jazz and Tap” and “Acting.” Afternoon classes to be offered that week are “Musical Theatre Jazz,” “Musical Theatre Jazz Dance” and “Acting.”
Morning classes being offered June 13-17 include “Contemporary,” “Ballet” and “Acting.” Afternoon classes during this session will include “Princess Ballet,” “Jazz and Tap” and “Acting.”
Each class will conduct a final performance for family members on the last day it meets.
Classes in both sessions are available in levels for children entering kindergarten, children entering first and second grades, children going into third through fifth grades, students entering sixth through eighth grades, and students going into ninth through 12th grades.
Classes will meet for one week Monday through Friday. Cost for a one-hour a day class for five days is $100. A two-hour a day class is $125 per week. A three-hour a day class is $150 per week. Theatre and Dance season ticket holders will receive a 15 percent discount. Families with multiple children also will receive a 15 percent discount.
