CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., April 17, 2006ᾰTwenty-seven of the best young writers from among 42 schools in Southeast Missouri and the St. Louis metropolitan area were honored April 8 at the 25th annual awards ceremony for the Southeast Missouri Writing Achievement Awards program held at Southeast Missouri State University.
The program was started in 1982 by the University’s Department of English. The Department of English sponsors the annual program to encourage students in grades four through 12 in their writing.
This year’s program included a presentation by Dr. Thomas Harte, local radio personality and professor emeritus of speech communication.
The winning entries were judged by a team of Southeast English faculty and represent some of the best young writers in the state. At the ceremony, first place awards and honorable-mention awards were presented at the ceremony to writers of fiction, essays and poetry in three grade ranges: four through six, seven through nine and 10-12. The winning entries were published in booklet form and presented to the winners and their schools. All winners were also awarded a special T-shirt and a certificate of achievement.
