Southeast Offering Emergency Text Messaging Service


Students, Faculty, Staff Urged to Register


Aug. 25, 2009 – With the start of the fall 2009 semester, Southeast Missouri State University is now offering emergency text messaging for its students, faculty and staff.

The new service will allow the University to send text messages to recipients’ cell phones with information about situations deemed critical by the University.

Those interested in receiving the free service are asked to register for it via the University’s portal page at On the lefthand side, under the “My Southeast Help” section, a link titled “Emergency Text Messaging” will lead those interested in participating to registration information.

Participants must provide their cell phone number and select the name of their service provider from a dropdown menu. They will then have the option to elect to receive emergency messages directed to the Cape Girardeau campus, the regional campuses or both. They then must activate the messaging service.

Those electing the service must have a cell phone capable of receiving text messages. While participation in the program is free, those receiving the text messages may be charged for them depending on the wireless carrier service agreement covering their cell phone.

Rodger Chisman, director of Telecommunications at Southeast, said the University plans to test the system two to three times a year to ensure it is working properly. He says Telecommunications is pleased to offer the new service and hopes the new system will provide another layer of communication for the University to use in critical situations.
