CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Dec. 1, 2014 – Southeast Missouri State University student Justin Robinson of St. Louis says he figured he had good reason to miss class last week.
He appeared on a taping of the “Steve Harvey” show to surprise and thank Cedric “The Entertainer” Kyles for the scholarship he was awarded through Cedric’s charitable foundation.
Robinson said the “Steve Harvey” show flew him and his mother, Alfreda Robinson, to Chicago, transported them to the WMAQ/NBC 5 downtown studios, provided them with their own “green room” and prepped them for their interview.
“It was a really unique experience,” Robinson said. “I kind of felt like a Superstar. You also got to see how TV works and how everything is planned.”
Cedric, a Southeast alumnus, was on the Steve Harvey Show to promote his new movie, “Top Five,” opening in theaters Dec. 12. As a surprise to Cedric, Harvey took the opportunity to promote Cedric’s charitable foundation as well, inviting Robinson to appear as one of Cedric’s scholarship recipients.
The program is scheduled to air Dec. 12 on KDNL in St. Louis.
Robinson is a sophomore at Southeast Missouri State University majoring in sport management. He received a $1,000 scholarship through Cedric’s charitable foundation prior to his freshman year.
“I really didn’t have to take out any loans because of the scholarship,” Robinson said. “It’s a lot easier knowing I am somewhat financially secure.”
He said Cedric joked with him that the scholarship is actually a loan that he expects repayment on when he (Cedric) is older.
“He’s just a cool, down to earth, funny person,” Robinson said, calling Cedric’s work through his foundation “genuine.”
During the appearance, Cedric asked Robinson about his future goals after graduation. A Pattonville High School graduate, Robinson told him he plans to attend law school and become a sports agent. He said the interview also allowed him “to get my plug in for the University.”
His mother, he said, offered Cedric “her own thank you.”
In addition to the Cedric the Entertainer Scholarship, Robinson is the recipient of the University Scholarship, the Dr. Donald Suggs Scholarship and the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Scholarship. He is the vice president of finance of the Southeast Student Alumni Association, treasurer of the Sport Management Society and a member of the Presidential Search Committee and the All-University Judicial Board. He is employed on campus in the Academic Support Centers through Academic Support Centers Mentoring Program/Student Support Services.
