CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., March 19, 2007 — Six Southeast Missouri State University students in three boats will be fishing in one of the larger bass fishing tournaments this week sponsored by Arkansas Tech University.
The Arkansas Tech Smash-Mouth Bass Invitational is being held March 23-24, and Arkansas Tech is one of the top ranked teams in the country.
“We are excited about this opportunity to compete” stated Ryan Pensel, one of the Bass Angler Club members taking part in the event.
Southeast is using three boats to participate in the event. They will compete alongside more than 50 other boats from U.S. colleges and universities. Russellville, Ark., is assisting with the event, providing lodging arrangements, meals and equipment for the participants.
Southeast students participating are Ryan Pensel, Taylor Gorton, John Parsons, Mikey Raines, Alex Skelton, and Josh Beussink. All of these students have attained sponsorships to defray travel costs associated with the event. Participants will also be wearing Southeast Bass Angler shirts, a first for the Southeast team. Shirts were provided by the Department of Recreation Services for this event.
Participants will fish all day on Friday, March 23, and until 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 24. At that time, total weight for all fish that were reeled in will be calculated and winners announced.
The Southeast team has done well in two previous national tournament, scoring in the top 25 for each event. The team has received media coverage from ESPN and Fox Sports Net while participating.
