CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., April 1, 2005 ᾰ The Group Area Housing Staff and Group Area Council in the Office of Residence Life at Southeast Missouri State University will be sponsoring the First Annual Redhawks in a Box service event on April 9 and 10 on the Academic Terraces.
Student groups will be gathering on the Academic Terraces to show support for those in need in the Cape Girardeau community by sleeping outside in boxes overnight. The event will take place from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monetary donations distributed to Habitat for Humanity and the Salvation Army will be collected before the event. Clothing for the Salvation Army and non-perishable food items for FISH will be collected before and during the event.
The five members of the Group Area Staff and the six members of the Group Area Council have worked hard to prepare an event that will raise awareness among students in a way other than collecting donations. Boxes have been collected from a variety of businesses in Cape Girardeau so student teams will be able to build an adequate box shelter for the night.
Students will come as a team and build a box shelter out of the provided boxes. Building time begins at 5 p.m., with the actual event beginning at 7 p.m. For 12 hours, there must be at least one member of each team in their shelter. There will be activities and speakers throughout the early evening to keep the students motivated.
All Southeast Missouri State University students are welcome to participate. Students wishing to register for the event should contact Joanna Shaver at (573) 651-2003.
