Studio Jazz Ensemble to Appear at Elmhurst Jazz Festival Feb. 27 in Chicago


VP-Music-JazzCAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Feb. 24, 2016 — The Southeast Missouri State University Studio Jazz Ensemble has been invited to appear at the 49th annual Elmhurst Jazz Festival in Chicago.

The premiere jazz organization of Southeast also will perform at four high schools in the Farmington/Festus, Missouri, area on Thursday, Feb. 25, including North County High School, Hillsboro High School, DeSoto High School and Jefferson R-7 High School.

The Studio Jazz Ensemble will perform four selections at their Elmhurst performance: “Decoupage” by Hank Levy, a chart written for the Stan Kenton jazz orchestra in 5/4 time; “Told You So” by Bill Holman, recorded by the Count Basie orchestra; “Bedouin” by Duke Pearson, recently re-scored and released by Doug DuBoff, and “Better Get Hit In Your Soul” by Charles Mingus. Featured soloists include Steven Watkins (alto sax, flute – senior music performance major), Dustin Haigler (keyboard – junior music performance major), Daniel Atwood (guitar – senior music performance major), Jon Allgeyer (trumpet – junior music performance major) and Matt Flanagan (trombone – junior music performance major).

The band will perform at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 27, in the Hammerschmidt Chapel on the Elmhurst College campus.   Admission to this event is free.
