TAO – The Martial Art of Drumming offers high-energy, athletic performances.
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo.,
Feb. 19, 2010 – Rhythm, athleticism, drums and high energy will combine when TAO – The Martial Art of Drumming — comes to Southeast Missouri State University’s River Campus. This high powered performance is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. March 6 in the Donald C. Bedell Performance Hall.
“Taiko drumming is a magnificent art form,” said Bob Cerchio, assistant director at the River Campus. “You have these huge drums played by up to 20 drummers. The impact is riveting. You can feel your chest move. Add to that the amazing athleticism of this company, and this is one performance you don’t want to miss.”
The performers come from different backgrounds and expertise and spend years training in Japan before performing with the group. TAO began 16 years ago in Japan with a dream of selling one million tickets in Kyushu, Japan, alone. Since reaching that goal in 2000, TAO has performed worldwide, and the number of tickets sold has grown exponentially. In 2004, TAO performed at the world’s largest arts festival, Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Scotland, resulting in 25 days of sold-out shows, and netting the largest volume of ticket sales of all festival performers.
TAO divides its time by spending a third of the year on international performances, a third of the year on domestic performances and the last third on group production and development. They recently completed a tour of Japan and are now in the middle of a 60-city U.S. tour, starting in Hawaii and moving through Seattle, San Diego, Santa Barbara, Tucson, Chicago, Atlanta, and eventually Broadway. The tour also includes its stop in Cape Girardeau.
Tickets may be purchased at the River Campus Box Office, located in the Cultural Arts Center, 518 S. Fountain St., weekdays, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., or by calling (573) 651-2265.
