CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Feb. 7, 2012–The Tony Award-winning romantic comedy “The Pajama Game” will take the stage at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 22-23 and Feb. 25, 8 p.m. Feb. 24 and 2 p.m. Feb 26 in the Donald C. Bedell Performance Hall at the Southeast Missouri State University River Campus.
Taking place in the Sleep-Tite Pajama Factory, this musical comedy tells the story of the dangers of a workplace romance in the midst of a labor pay upheaval. While the workers’ demands for a pay raise of seven and a half cents go unheeded, the union grievance committee head, Babe Williams, and the factory’s new superintendent, Sid Sorokin, begin a blossoming relationship.
When the workers finally decide to strike, Babe and Sid’s stormy relationship comes to a head, setting off not only a conflict between management and labor but a battle of the sexes as well.
The production is directed by Dr. Kenn Stilson, interim chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance.
“The Pajama Game is George Abbott’s bright, brassy, raucous and rollicking, Tony Award-Winning musical, featuring wildly fun dance based on the original choreography by the one and only, Bob Fosse,” Stilson said. “Pajama Game integrates a marvelous romantic comedy plot, exploring the dangers of a workplace romance to hysterical effect, with a brilliant and ingratiating score, a brigade of highly skilled performers, and a series of charming sets. This musical has been receiving world-wide standing ovations since its original 1954 run, and the encores continue in 2012.”
