CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Nov. 2, 2010 – Students at Southeast Missouri State University and members of the Southeast community will join millions of people around the world to celebrate Global Entrepreneurship Week Nov. 15-20.
“There is a growing movement of entrepreneurial people generating new ideas and seeking better ways of doing things in all sectors of our economy and society,” said Dr. James Stapleton, executive director of Southeast’s Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship.
Stapleton is the creator of Southeast’s Global Entrepreneurship Week event and regional director for Missouri.
“Global Entrepreneurship Week is an initiative that inspires people to embrace innovation, imagination and creativity – to think big; to turn their ideas into reality; to make their mark,” he said.
“Through this initiative, the next generation of entrepreneurs will be inspired and can emerge,” Stapleton said. “In doing so, they will begin to acquire the knowledge, skills and networks needed to develop innovative, sustainable enterprises and careers that have a positive impact on their lives, their families and communities.”
“We believe entrepreneurship is a way of life for the 21st Century, and that individuals from all walks of life will benefit from adopting entrepreneurial behavior,” Stapleton said. “We have planned events that will bring together students and members of the community from a wide variety of backgrounds and areas of study with successful entrepreneurs to consider the importance of entrepreneurship across a wide spectrum of society. The 21st Century will be led by innovators, and the events we have planned on campus will provide students an opportunity to explore creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship,” he added.
Global Entrepreneurship Week, now in its third year at Southeast, will connect young people everywhere through local, national and global activities designed to help them explore their potential as self-starters and innovators, and to develop an entrepreneurial mindset and culture. Students, educators, entrepreneurs, business leaders, employees, non-profit leaders, government officials and many others will participate in a range of activities, from large-scale competitions and events to intimate networking gatherings. The week will focus on generating new ideas and seeking better ways of doing things.
Global Entrepreneurship Week was created by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation in the United States and the Make Your Mark campaign in the United Kingdom in 2008. Students in countries across six continents will participate in the 2010 Global Entrepreneurship Week events.
Stapleton has worked with individuals and groups within the Southeast community to create a series of local events that reflects the priority the University places on stimulating local and regional economic growth and development that improves the quality of lives, communities and businesses in southeast Missouri.
Southeast’s Global Entrepreneurship Week will include a series of events that will engage participants in various dimensions of entrepreneurship, including segments on agricultural entrepreneurship; entrepreneurship in the arts; entrepreneurship for women; local entrepreneurship; a keynote address by Delatorro McNeal II, a bestselling author and internationally renowned public speaker; Fault-Line Film Festival student awards ceremony; and the Imagine It! Innovation Challenge and Sustaining Southeast competitions for students.
Global Entrepreneurship Week at Southeast is directed by the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship. Sponsors include the Donald L. Harrison College of Business, College of Liberal Arts, Earl and Margie Holland School of Visual and Performing Arts, and the President’s Office. Support is provided by the Cape Girardeau Area Chamber of Commerce, KFVS-12, the Redhawk’s Collegiate Entrepreneurs Organization, and the Sustainability Committee at Southeast.
Global Entrepreneurship Week Kick off & Imagine It! Challenge Unveiling The week kicks off with the Imagine It! Innovation Challenge to be unveiled at the opening ceremony of Global Entrepreneurship Week at noon on Monday,
Nov. 15, in Robert A. Dempster Hall. The challenge is open to Southeast student teams and challenges them to create as much value as possible using an assigned, everyday object. Teams have five days to create value – economic or social – from the object. True value is realized from actually implementing ideas and delivering results. To be successful, students are encouraged to take actions, challenge assumptions, seize opportunities, and be innovative and Imagine It!
Teams chronicle their efforts by submitting a three-minute video to a YouTube user group. Videos must be submitted by 8 a.m. on Nov. 19. A $1,000 prize will be awarded to one team in four categories, and winners will be showcased at the award ceremony on Nov. 19 at noon in Robert A. Dempster Hall.
Delatorro McNeal II – Rules of the Game Delatorro L. McNeal II, entrepreneur, author and internationally renowned public speaker, will present the keynote address at the Global Entrepreneurship Week kick off ceremony at noon Monday, Nov 15 in Glenn Auditorium of Robert A. Dempster Hall. McNeal’s address is titled “Rules of the Game: How to Write Your Own Ticket in College and Beyond.”
McNeal travels the country delivering hard-hitting, high –energy and paradigm shifting presentations to major corporations, colleges, universities, professional associations, conventions, churches and leadership conferences. McNeal has been featured on national and worldwide television networks like Fox News, NBC, BET, TBN, Daystar, Oxygen, and The Word Network as well as syndicated radio shows all across America.
Agriculture EntrepreneurshipEntrepreneurship in agriculture will be the focus at an event featuring a series of short presentations titled “Know Local, Buy Local, Eat Local” scheduled for 8:45-11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 16, in the 4-H Building on the SEMO District Fairgrounds. The Agricultural Entrepreneurship program will feature local producers and resource providers and will have local specialists discussing marketing strategies for small growers, organic producers and agri-tourism destinations.
Heritage Farms owner Gerry Jones will share his story of how he developed his unique business model. Jones Heritage Farm will cater a local foods breakfast to kick off the morning.

Sustainability at Southeast: An Idea CompetitionGlobal Entrepreneurship Week also will present an opportunity to address sustainability at Southeast. Stapleton says it is a priority at Southeast that the University shifts from old ways of thinking towards new perspectives on environment, economic and societal stewardship. Moving toward this new campus culture of sustainability and innovation will require the involvement and commitment of all members of the Southeast community, he said.
To this end, a Sustainability at Southeast competition will be held that seeks innovative and practical ideas on how the University community can most effectively make progress toward development of a campus culture of sustainability. Submissions must be received by 1 p.m. on Wednesday,
Nov. 17, and will be evaluated for merit in three areas – innovation and originality, practicality and feasibility, and significant impacts on a large portion of the University community. A $1,000 prize will be awarded to first place teams in each of six categories, and winners will be announced at the award ceremony at noon on Nov. 19 in Robert A. Dempster Hall.
Entrepreneurship in the ArtsOn Wednesday, Nov. 17, participants in the week’s events will turn their attention to entrepreneurship in the arts. “Art and Innovation” will be the topic of a presentation by Sharon and J. Kim Tucci on Wednesday, Nov. 17. They will share their perspective on how artists can be successful arts entrepreneurs at noon in the Donald C. Bedell Performance Hall on the River Campus.
J. Kim Tucci has served as chairman of the board of Cinema St. Louis, chairman of the Missouri Film Commission, and president of the St. Louis International Film Festival. He is also co-founder of the Pasta House Co. restaurant.
Sharon is founder of TalentPlus Inc., the first American Federation of Television & Radio Artist (AFTRA) Screen Actors Guild commercial talent agency in St. Louis.
Fault-Line Film Festival – Awards and ScreeningThe Fault-Line Film Festival will follow the Tuccis’ presentation. The festival is designed to advance creativity and innovation through filmmaking. The competition will test artists’ imagination, creativity, and teamwork as they develop five-to-eight minute short films. The Festival will feature two competitions. The Fault-Line Invitational will provide the opportunity for script writers, actors, and production and editing technicians to compete for spots on film making teams. The Invitational competition began on Monday, Nov. 1.
The Fault-Line 48-Hour Frenzy is for the freelancer looking for a creative challenge. On Friday, Nov. 12, teams will be given a script, teams then have the weekend to shoot and edit a movie using any resources they can gather. Completed five- to eight-minute films must be submitted by Monday, Nov. 15, as teams compete for $4,000 in prizes.
Awards and winning films will be announced and screened at the Fault-Line Film Festival Award Ceremony Wednesday, Nov. 17 at 1 p.m. in the Donald C. Bedell Performance Hall at the River Campus. A larger number of selected films will be screened at the Fault-Line Film Festival Gala Wednesday, Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. in the Rose Theatre. Audience members will vote on an Audience Choice award and refreshments will be served.
Pathways to EntrepreneurshipLocal entrepreneurs will share their success stories at a panel discussion on Nov. 18. “Locals Who’ve Launched: A Panel Presentation” will feature local entrepreneurs Andy Schwartz, Chris Edmonds and Laurie Everett as they share their experiences launching their successful ventures from scratch. The panel discussion will be held Thursday, Nov. 18, at noon in Glenn Auditorium of Robert A. Dempster Hall.
Schwarz graduated from Southeast Missouri State University in 1986. In 1992, Schwartz founded AJ Adhesives., which distributes industrial adhesive to all manufacturing sectors, and in 1998 he bought Mid America Packaging, an equipment company. Both companies have corporate headquarters in St. Louis with branch locations in Houston, Dallas, Tulsa, Seattle and Chicago.
Edmonds attended Southeast is 1987, where he majored in philosophy and English and minored in German. He is the founder and current president of Element 74, LLC, a full service website and custom software development firm offering graphic design, copywriting, search engine optimization (SEO), social media integration, content management systems and custom database programming.
Everett joined the Southeast faculty in 2007 as an instructor in the Department of Management and Marketing. She holds a master of arts degree in human relations from the University of Oklahoma and a bachelor of science degree in criminal justice. Everett also owns and operates Annie Laurie’s Antiques and works on the steering committee for the improvement of Cape Girardeau’s historic downtown.
Women Inspiring eNtrepreneurship (WIN!) Global Entrepreneurship Week will come to a close with the Women Inspiring eNtrepreneurship! (WIN!) Conference on Saturday, Nov. 20.
Women who have new venture ideas and would like to start a business, women who currently own a business, women who are leading business careers, or any women who want to be inspired to lead more entrepreneurial lives are invited to the WIN! Conference from 7:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Robert A. Dempster Hall.
Brenda Warner, author, mother, philanthropist, and wife of football icon Kurt Warner, will present the keynote address, “WIN!ing the Game.” Those who attend will participate in a variety of short, fast-paced discussions and activities that offer practical advice, motivational messages from successful entrepreneurs and networking opportunities, inspiring attendees to put their ideas into action.
Session topics will include “Kickoff: Finding Balance in the Game;” “4th and Goal: Changing the Game Plan When Necessary;” “Special teams: The Healthy, Wealthy, Wise and Wonderful Breakout Sessions;” along with Warner’s keynote message.
