Small Business Training Coming to Cape


Innovation Center classCAPE GIRARDEAU, MO., April 25, 2014 – Have you been thinking about starting your own business?  Do you want to be an entrepreneur who has realized your dream of owning your own business?  Do you need help writing a business plan or even a course in QuickBooks or Customer Service?  If so, you cannot afford to miss the upcoming trainings that will be offered at the Institute for Regional Innovation and Entrepreneurship, 920 Broadway in Cape Girardeau.

The first training, “How to Write a Business Plan,” will be offered from 9 a.m. to noon on Thursday, May 15. The cost for this class will be $40.  During this three-hour seminar, participants will learn the importance of business plans and the key elements that are required of a successful plan.  Topics will include: define the business concept, learn the necessary components of the formal plan, understand how to research the feasibility, learn how to assess the industry, market and competition, and develop basic financial projections from marketing analysis.  Participants will be provided individual feedback to help create a viable and useful business plan.

Operation JumpStart (OJS), a nationally-recognized, highly-successful training model for individuals considering starting or expanding a business, will begin on Thursday, June 5, from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.  The class will meet one day a week for four weeks.  During this time, participants will learn essential business planning and preparation skills such as product pricing, legal structure, competition, marketing and cash flow management.  The OJS program has been instrumental in assisting more than 700 individuals who have started or expanded more than 250 small businesses in southeast Missouri and elsewhere.

For those who prefer online coursework, a webinar on customer service will be held on Wednesday, June 18, from noon–1:30 p.m.  Participants will learn how to deliver outstanding customer service by learning how to avoid and prevent some of the most common mistakes made when interacting with customers. Cost for this webinar is $25

QuickBooks is very beneficial for all business owners.  This four-day workshop will be held on July 7-8 and July 14-15 from 6–9 p.m.  Cost of the workshop will be $125.  Participants will be taught the basics of QuickBooks which will help you track the progress of your company, giving you time to focus on your business.

On Thursday, July 31, “How to Start a New Business” will be offered from 9 a.m.-noon.  Participants will be given an overview of the critical first steps associated with starting a business.  You will assess your strengths and weaknesses in terms of business ownership, learn about the importance of planning, discuss legal and regulatory requirements, and identify sources of financing.  Cost for this course will be $40.

Operation JumpStart will be offered again beginning Aug. 5.  Classes will be held every Tuesday and Thursday night during the month from 6– 9 p.m.
