U.S. News Recognizes Southeast Among Best Midwestern Regional Universities

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Sept. 11, 2015 – Southeast Missouri State University has been recognized among the best regional universities in the Midwest in the 2016 U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges rankings released this week.

Southeast has been consistently ranked by the publication since 1993.

Institutions categorized as best regional universities provide a full range of undergraduate majors and master’s degree programs. The rankings measure the strength of academic programs, using 16 measures of academic excellence. Regional universities are divided and ranked in four geographical groups: North, South, Midwest and West.

“Southeast is a place where students receive a quality education that can launch an extraordinary career,” said Dr. Debbie Below, vice president for enrollment management and student success and dean of students. “The University is committed to continuing to strengthen academics and the student experience.”

Additionally, this week’s rankings place Southeast 68th for the best online degree programs.

According to U.S. News, 296 schools reported having online bachelor’s degree programs when schools were surveyed in 2014. The programs were evaluated based on their success at engaging students, the credentials of their faculty and the services and technologies made available remotely.

“Southeast was an early entrant into the field of online education, with our first online courses offered in 1999, and the first online degree program in 2003.  In the last five years Southeast Online has grown rapidly, both in number of students and credit hours enrolled and in the number of degree programs offered” said Dr. Allen Gathman, dean of Online Learning and director of the Center for Scholarship in Teaching and Learning at Southeast. “We continue to adhere to the same guiding principles of academic quality and service to the students that were the foundation of Southeast Online from the beginning.  It is gratifying to be recognized among the increasingly competitive online educational market, and I expect that we will continue to excel in this field.”

Southeast’s inclusion in the 2016 edition of Best Colleges by U.S. News & World Report is consistent with other ranking organizations that regularly have selected Southeast Missouri State University among the best colleges and universities in the Midwest.

The 2016 edition of the U.S. News Best Colleges guidebook includes data on nearly 1,800 colleges and universities, including statistics on borrowing, costs and graduation rates. It also offers comprehensive advice for high school students and their families on researching their college choices, completing applications and financing their education.
