Volunteers Needed for Nov. 23 Robotics Competition at Southeast

Southeast Missouri State University’s Department of Engineering and Technology is seeking volunteers to help as it hosts the seventh annual FIRST® LEGO League (FLL) competition Nov. 23 in the University Center.

The competition is for 4th to 8th grade students who will participate in teams. Students build a robot using LEGO® MINDSTORMS® technology to complete a themed mission for points. This year, the FLL competition will have a City Shaper challenge as its mission, transporting teams to be part of a thriving community brimming with inspiration, creativity and hope for a stronger, more sustainable future—one that’s built better together. Student participants will build, test and program autonomous robots to solve a set of missions and real-world problems. To learn more about this year’s program, visit http://www.firstinspires.org/robotics/fll.

Volunteers are needed on the day of the event from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Anyone 16 or older is welcome to help. Little training is required, and most will be done the day of the event. In exchange for time, volunteers will be provided breakfast and lunch.

Volunteers can sign up at http://www.firstinspires.org and click “Log In” in the upper right corner. Volunteers who have an account can sign in with their account information. If not, they can click “Register” in the upper right corner or the “Sign Up Here” option below the log in button. After a volunteer account is created, volunteers should verify their personal information and follow the “Volunteer Registration” option in the main dashboard and then select “Volunteer at an event.” Volunteers should select the role in which they are interested.

Volunteers also are asked to complete a Youth Protection form. Those volunteering can select to pay later when signing up for the event, and FLL will cover that cost. Volunteers will receive an email confirming their completion of the Youth Protection application and another one once a background check has been completed.

Volunteers will be placed in a role in one to two weeks. Keep in mind these roles may change as the event’s needs change. To ensure they receive the correct role, volunteers are asked to complete the “extra” information in their volunteer profile. For roles that require pre-competition training, volunteers will receive an email before the competition from their group leaders. All volunteers will receive more detailed information about the event closer to the date of the competition.

Volunteer guidelines and additional resources are available at https://www.firstinspires.org/resource-library/volunteer/general-volunteer-resources.
