Nov. 5, 2004 –Wayne Smith of Southlake, Texas, vice president of Expansion Markets with Verizon, has been named vice president for University Advancement and executive director of the Southeast Missouri University Foundation. His appointment is effective Nov.30, 2004.
Smith brings executive leadership experience in both public- and private-sector companies, along with demonstrated expertise in marketing, sales and operational leadership.
Southeast President Ken Dobbins stated, “We are very fortunate to attract a person of Wayne Smith’s caliber. His ability to establish and build strong relationships coupled with his connections in Cape Girardeau and corporate St. Louis will be invaluable as we take our Foundation to another level.”
In his current position, Smith has built and managed Verizon’s competitive yellow pages markets in the United States. He has established and operated sales, marketing and operational support for more than 40 newly established major markets such as San Diego, Denver, Miami, Orlando, San Antonio, Austin, Minneapolis, Phoenix and others across the country. He also has been responsible for building a 700-plus member sales and marketing team.
Previously, he served as president of WorkNet Communications, Inc., where he provided overall leadership to the business while directing day-to-day operations and long-range planning. Prior to his service at WorkNet Communications, Inc., he was president of TXU Communications Businesses. While there, Smith oversaw business units, including TXU Telephone, TXU Telecom, TXU Wholesale and TXU Services.
Smith began his career at Southwestern Bell Corp., now SBC. He served in various management positions of increasing responsibility before becoming general manager of Cybertel Cellular, a subsidiary of Ameritech in 1990.
In 1994, he was named president of Consolidated Communications Directories, and in 1998, he became president for the Illinois Consolidated Telephone Company.
Smith holds a bachelor of science degree in education from Southeast Missouri State University. Formerly, he was a board member of the Sara H. Bush Regional Hospital Group in Mattoon, Ill., and of Memorial Regional Hospital Group in Lufkin, Texas. He has been a member of the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, the Area Wide United Way and the Coles County Economic Development Board of Directors in Coles County, Ill.
At Southeast, Smith will be responsible for providing vision, strategic leadership and daily management for the University’s overall development and alumni programs. He will lead a staff of 12 professionals and support personnel and will be responsible for researching, designing, cultivating, coordinating and executing all development programs, including major gifts, corporate/foundation gifts, the annual telefund campaign, alumni gifts and planned giving.
Smith is married and he and his wife, Debbie, have one daughter, Ashleigh, who is a junior at Texas Christian University.
